Engineering products and services company translates their website with the help of a translation glossary
Client Profile
A global leader in rotating equipment solutions and supplying engineered technologies and services to process industries designs and manufactures a variety of products, including mechanical sealings, filtration systems, seals support systems, power transmission couplings, upstream oil & gas products, packing, dry gas seals and wet seals. Headquartered in the U.S., the company has manufacturing sites, sales and service centers and training facilities worldwide.
The Challenge
As a global company, the client had to ensure that their product catalogs, brochures, etc. were translated from English to the native languages of their customers and prospects. These translations had been done by internal staff that, many times, didn’t have the language translation expertise or knowledge of technical terms to consistently turn out quality material. The lack of translation experience, as well as translations being done without a translation memory resulted in documents that were prone to errors.
Recently, the client made the decision to open their website to online sales. This initiative unlocked a new source of content that required high-quality translations. Since online translation errors could hinder sales instead of giving it the expected boost, the client knew they needed the help of a professional translation company. As their incumbent language translation partner, they turned to us to translate the website to Spanish.
The Solution
Although the client didn’t want to retranslate their documents, the dedicated BURG team used the previously translated documents to align the translation and create a term base. This step provided the client with an additional benefit in that it resolved translation issues within documents that were translated internally. To ensure the project remained on track and had a flawless conclusion, the BURG team provided the following services:
Glossary
- Extracted terms from the newly created translation memory to create a glossary
- Translated the glossary
- Enlisted the assistance of client staff, that knew the technical terms, to review the glossary
- Updated the glossary based on review feedback
Style guide
- Obtained the company style guide from MarComms
- Created a translation style guide which was reviewed and approved by the client
Website
- Pre-translated the website using the translation memory and glossary
- Translated the remainder of the website
- Tested the website’s functionality and provided it to the client for review and approval
- Website went live in just two months
The Results
The project exceeded expectations and the client is reaping a multitude of benefits, including:
- Centralization of all translations in a single database
- Ability to reduce the time to translate documents with an internally approved translation glossary and formalized translation style guide
- Improved quality control over future translation projects
- Achieved translations that meet localization standards
